Harrisburg Cleanup

Although it hasn’t felt like it lately amongst the numerous polar vortex cold snaps we’ve had, Spring is on it’s way! Spring cleaning can be a fantastic way to encourage that warm weather to return! We, as a community, have come together the last two Aprils and collected several TONS of the garbage that has blown across windy fields into our town. I am so proud to be part of a community that comes together and lends a hand to tackle this big job. This will be our 3rdAnnual “Harrisburg CleanUp” event, and I invite you to take part!

Harrisburg Clean Up Volunteers

Last year, we were led by Mrs. Plahn’s science class with a lesson on saving the planet. We had so many people show up to help pick up garbage in the town; families, members of churches, even a few Sioux Falls residents! We are hoping to have the same great turnout this year, and we will always take more help. We will have various locations throughout the town set up with garbage cans, and we will split up the volunteers to cover the areas needing attention. If you have concerns about a particular area, please contact me so that we can adequately staff it!

We are looking for volunteers, as well as sponsors for this event! I am hoping to reach local businesses to help cover the costs of the T-shirts (worn for safety as we will be working along the highways), signs and materials, cost of disposal, rubber gloves and trash bags, and donuts and hot chocolate (incentive for the kids to get involved, too!) Roo’s Sanitation, out of Tea, has volunteered their time and services to help with the setup of cans, and transportation to the Lincoln County Transfer Station again this year. Sponsors will be recognized when we meet for donuts and zone assignments, as well as have your logo printed on the t-shirts! Please contact me if you are interested in sponsoring this community event. To volunteer to help, please join the “Harrisburg General (of South Dakota)” Facebook page, after answering both of the preliminary join questions, and RSVP in the Harrisburg Volunteer CleanUp 2019 Event so that we can reserve a t-shirt for you! If you are a business looking to show your support, please contact Leah Janssen at 605-941-5977. I appreciate our community and look forward to giving it that polish it deserves to welcome Spring!
